Startling Statistics

Usually when I’m driving somewhere, I listen to public radio in the car. I also read news tidbits on AOL, Comcast and our local newspaper. Often, I encounter statistics that blow my mind. I’m too lazy to try verifying the numbers, so I don’t really know if they’re true.

In the latest year for which numbers were compiled, teen-aged pregnancies… click here to continue

Caring About Medicare

I’ve never particularly been a fan of the Kennedy family, or Senator Ted Kennedy. Some of their escapades have been pretty startling. However, some members of the family have performed good deeds with what seems to be unselfish motivation.

When I toured the Senate chambers on a visit to Washington, D.C. a few years back, I was surprised that… click here to continue

We live in a corner apartment with a view of a several block area… click here to continue

Bright Lights

I could probably count on my fingers (without resorting to toes) the number of violent electrical storms I’ve experienced since living in the Portland-Vancouver area in the last forty-five years. In the last three days, we’ve had two such storms. Last night’s was pretty spooky. The lightning and thunder rolled over our area for about an hour, starting around 2:00… click here to continue

Smoke Pollution

According to the news broadcasts, the haze in our skies today is due to smoke from fires in California and Central Oregon. Health officials recommend that elderly people stay indoors. I have to admit I’m an elderly person. I’m content to stay indoors as much as possible, but I will go to the swimming pool and the grocery store, if… click here to continue
