Family Stories

Family gatherings that are most common around holidays are great places to swap family stories. As the sole surviving parent of a middle-aged sister and brother, hearing some of their scary tales for the first time, I am sometimes amazed that they survived to adulthood. I’m sure they wouldn’t have perished at my hand had I known these stories earlier,… click here to continue

A Thankful Weekend

This has turned into a really great Thanksgiving weekend. Our weather has been wonderful. We were able to enjoy a marvelous dinner with most of Floyd’s family on Thursday. We hope that the couple suffering from the flu, who weren’t able to join us, are recovering now.

We’re expecting a fun group for dinner here tomorrow—my daughter and son, with… click here to continue

There is already a good deal of controversy out there over health care reform and a lot of misinformation being bandied about. “They’re going to pull the plug on Grandma,” for example. Well, I’m not… click here to continue

Driving Privileges

Toward the end of the instruction given by the A.A.R.P. volunteer for senior drivers, the delicate subject of when to retire your driving privileges was broached. Odd how much more sensitive the issue seems when you’re in the affected age bracket. The instructor suggested that, if you have any doubt about your abilities, you go to the Department of Motor… click here to continue

Word Origins

I just read that Face Book users have created a new verb that will be officially recognized as “new word of the year” by someone or other. The word is “unfriend.” Not a very welcoming word, what? Between all the new social networks, texting and tweeting, etc., I’m sure there will be dozens, if not hundreds, of new words cropping… click here to continue
