A Strange Summer

We have had strange weather this summer. Oregonians are noted for claiming “unusual” weather to tourists, especially when it’s raining. Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for 65 years, I’ve become accustomed to the rain, but the temperatures switching back and forth constantly rile up old arthritic joints. We’ve had many switches the past few months.

A group around the swimming pool where we were today were speculating that we might still be swimming outdoors in October and November this year, maybe even have an outdoor Christmas party. Optimists! Today was a beautiful day, but we are promised a much cooler high tomorrow.

This weekend we are supposed to be treated to meteorites in the night sky, at least in places away from city lights. I don’t imagine we’ll see them here in our suburb and I can’t get excited about driving out into the tulles to take a look. In years past I’ve seen fabulous displays--once at Lake Billy Chinook and another time at Goldendale. At Lake Billy Chinook, I was convinced that my companion and I saw a UFO. When that whirling disk with its circle of lights was moving toward us, it was pretty frightening. But, as quickly as it appeared, it vanished.

Having read several biographies of film stars and watched a lot of old movies recently, I’m convinced that Hollywood is the loony bin of the world. Mind you, we haven’t watched all of all the movies we’ve brought home from libraries. Sometimes we don’t get past the first five minutes before shutting them down. Tonight we watched a film that was pretty weird. We had to keep watching, hoping we’d figure out what was going on.

After playing today, tomorrow we have chores to do. Once again we need to move everything possible off the deck and cover what we can’t move. Preparation work begins Monday and crews will be painting the outside of our building later in the week. Also, I discovered some sort of a spill on a wall behind the shelves in the laundry room. In order to clean that up, the shelves will have to be emptied. A good time to sort and toss stuff. I hope the spill is soap and not something that will leave a stain to be painted over.

The other basement apartment below us has a new occupant as of today. We met her briefly but, as usual, I can’t remember her name. I’ve got to work harder at concentrating on names.
