Affordable Homes

Today AOL ran a story on homes in various parts of the country that are available for sale at prices of $150,000 or less. I was surprised how many there were at prices considered affordable in this day and age. The first house I ever owned a piece of was purchased for $4,999 in 1951, I believe.  A few of the $150,000 homes were similar in size and features to that tiny two-bedroom blockhouse, but many were better. I do think it’s sad that so few young people can become homeowners in our present economy.

The little house in Seattle was purchased with my husband’s GI loan. The development was built with the World War II veterans in mind. I wonder if any similar benefits will be available for veterans returning from our latest wars. It seems unlikely and that is really sad. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me our country was a kinder, gentler society in my youth.

True, there were greedy money-grubbers among us even then, but they didn’t appear to control our government. With what is perceived as a bumbling administration coming to an end, we can only wonder where we’ll go from here. Unfortunately, election campaigns don’t provide the answers.
