Body Changes

Yesterday morning I went to the dentist and got the permanent crown to replace the temporary I’ve been wearing for weeks. The old tooth broke off on the Fourth of July weekend, and the replacement has been in process ever since. It’s really great to have that over with. My mouth is happy; my bank account is not.

After that, I went to the shoe store, had my feet measured, and ordered a new pair of the clunky shoes I have to wear these days. I discovered my feet are half a size shorter and one width narrower than when I last bought shoes, thanks to the weight loss. I’ve been wearing two pairs of socks to keep my feet from sliding in the two pairs of shoes I bought in the last three years. These old clunky shoes have been to the Caribbean via Fort Lauderdale and to the Hawaiian Islands via San Diego and across the Pacific by cruise ship. Whoever gets them at Goodwill won’t know that.

Now that I’m elderly, I’m glad I was young in the era when older ladies wore shirtwaist dresses, girdles or garter belts with stockings, and laced-up oxfords, usually black. However, I wouldn’t mind if wearing gloves year-round were back in fashion now that my hands sport bruises most of the time. My skin is thinner and, at my doctor’s recommendation, I take a baby aspirin every day. Thus, it doesn’t take much of a bump to make a bruise. Sometimes I don’t even feel it.

The most annoying body change is the arthritis in my joints that forecasts weather changes for me. That’s one of the reasons I have to wear the clunky shoes, but they look okay with the jeans that are popular today. I do have a couple pairs of dressier shoes I can wear if I’m not going to be walking much. They’re good for meetings and classes, etc.

Speaking of weather changes, our short rainy spell has vanished and we have bright sun today. The forecast is for a high temperature of 84 degrees. I had to water again today.
