Chico Trip

After a wonderful six days with my sisters, a niece and nephew, a cousin and her husband, I returned home last night--tired and glad to be back. Somehow or other, my two sisters whom I met in San Francisco, managed to be nearly on time arriving in spite of leaving Seattle late and they also arrived home early last night.

On the other hand, my flight out of Portland was so late leaving that I missed my San Francisco connection and took the later flight to Chico with my sisters. Yesterday my flight home left at least a half hour late and arrived late. Consider as well that the airline changed my departure gate while I was having a quick supper, causing me to walk to the end of two separate concourses before I could board my flight and you can see why flying is not my favorite mode of transportation these days. The payoff is that we all were flying on the same airline.

I will be writing an account of the trip for my travel log pages on the website. This time I may have the luxury of plagiarizing some of the content from a very good account one sister in Seattle put together today and sent to us all.

This afternoon at the pool it was back to the drawing board to start taking off the four pounds I gained in six days. There are some really good restaurants in Chico. I had been concerned about how I would do with Thai food because of a previous bad experience, but we found two Thai establishments where I had delightful food. The appetizer I had for dinner in one of them was more than I could eat at one sitting and very tasty. My youngest sister and my niece had been to Chico several years ago and done some research to pave the way for a visit by this larger group.

All of us were impressed by the friendliness and courtesy of local people in Chico everywhere we went. And we were most impressed by Lynn, a cousin of our mother who is 99 years old, living alone in her own apartment, and as sharp as a tack. Years ago she wrote a book with genealogical information and stories about four or more branches of our relatives on our mother’s side of the family. She is still researching and vitally interested in everyone she meets. Charming and gracious, she is a real inspiration to all.

Lynn and her five surviving sisters, who call themselves “The Six Pack,” also have annual reunions. I can only imagine how lively those gatherings are.
