Do You Suppose?

Could there be a secret contest that no one knows about except the television networks to see who can produce the worst sitcom?

Am I the only person who thinks the new shows get worse every season? Once in a while, a hit pops up, but I can’t think of any I’ve seen recently.

I did enjoy Boston Legal, as outrageously unrealistic as it was, but we’ve lost it already. I’m not sure if Harry’s Law is defined as a sitcom, but I do like Kathy Bates and enjoy that show. Having worked for years in law offices, I just dig that genre. Granted, a law office in a shoe store is outrageous also. A steady diet of Law & Order reruns gets a bit tiresome.

With so many networks and so many stations, I’m sure it’s difficult for writers to keep them all supplied with scripts. I’m glad I’m not in that high pressure cooker. There must be a big variety of situations that can make an audience laugh. Audiences all have different backgrounds, are different ages and, at any given time, may have moods that affect how they react to humor. Picking the right combination of words for a given audience is, no doubt, a rare skill.

Now that I’ve acknowledged that it’s almost an impossible job to make people laugh week after week, I remember it has been done and hope it will be done again.
