Food Facts

One of the good things about being away from home for a week is the introduction to different foods. I tend to get in a rut, especially when I’m on a weight loss or maintenance program.

Twice in the last couple of years I’ve become ill after eating salmon. We had wild salmon at two different meals during the week in Southern California. I ate a small piece each time and got along very well with it. I’m really glad to learn that because I love most fish, including salmon and shellfish. Sardines or anchovies I can live without, and sushi is definitely not my style.

We shopped at healthy food stores including Trader Joe’s and another store called Henry’s, similar to New Seasons or Whole Foods here. Restocking my pantry at home, I included Trader Joe’s even though I have to wind around and cross Highway 99 as well as I-5 to get there. A dollop of their Greek vanilla yogurt surrounded by sliced strawberries is a delicious topping to my morning cereal. I found other goodies there, also.

We made some great chicken vegetable soup a couple of times that gave me ideas for different ingredients to add variety to my recipe. That’s on my menu for tomorrow night. There’s no way I can get the taste of the vine ripened strawberries we ate at least twice a day, but California strawberries are plentiful and available here and they will remind me how delectable those were.

Having new ideas for healthy meals should make it easier for me to maintain my weight loss. I’m also going to try to swim every other day to keep up the exercise part of the equation. With all this rain, I’m really grateful for the indoor pool and the hot tub is the icing on the cake.
