FriendsI’ve written before about how friends move away and die away as we grow older, so I really appreciate the few close friends I’m in regular contact with. (I love to end sentences with prepositions.) Today I learned I have one more thing in common with a good friend of many years. Not a commonality either of us would prefer, but we can commiserate with each other. Each of us has a middle-aged child whose behavior is worrisome to us. We have both struggled to come to terms with our situations. She has probably succeeded better than I. But I’m learning that I can’t change anything except my health by my reactions. Figure skating is one of my favorite spectator sports and a wonderful distraction. Tonight I’m watching the pairs’ short program competition at the Olympics, sandwiched between less interesting (to me) speed skating and skiing. This weekend the carpenter ants have returned with a vengeance. Killing the little buggars isn’t a favorite occupation, but it gives me a little extra exercise chasing them around. Tomorrow I’ll ring the management and get them on the case. |
