Home from Sunny California

After a week of glorious sunshine, I returned home to very wet streets last night. Weather today was mixed. After a bit of thunder and a downpour, we were treated to a colorful sunset in shades of pink and lavender. My sisters and I, along with a niece and nephew, had enjoyed a couple of sunsets in Oceanside from 5th and 7th floor balconies earlier in the week.

My daughter-in-law picked me up at the airport and introduced me to an interesting little café on Mt. Tabor called the Caldera. Mt. Tabor, a sign reminded us, is a volcano located inside a city—the only one, I think it said. The café is located in a very old building, formerly a drug store with some of that store’s lettering still visible. It’s a fascinating place. I wasn’t paying attention on the crooked step and took a tumble—but with minimal damage to this old body. Somehow my brain knew enough to roll my body onto the sidewalk.

Having four layers of clothes on didn’t hurt at all. Sometimes airplanes get very cold and I’d been prepared. On short flights (maybe even on long ones, I haven’t taken any lately) no blankets are provided. I was quite comfortable on the plane and the flight was on time and uneventful, thankfully. The kind of exciting events that occur on some flights these days are not to be desired.

When I took my seat across the aisle from a young black woman, with a cute baby she said is seven weeks old, I was prepared for some noise. Not a peep was heard the entire flight. The child slept most of the time. The mother shared that she was concerned that a growth spurt might be causing the drowsiness, and the aunt and grandmother who were waiting for their visit might be disappointed that the baby was not more alert. I suggested they might have a long night ahead with a wide-awake tot. She agreed that was a possibility. Then my driver arrived and we left.

I’ll write about the great visit with my sisters and other relatives when I’m more rested.
