If I Believed

If I believed in Hell, the things I read about that are going on in the world today would cause me to worry about its geographic limits. Will there be space for all who qualify? Should population control be exercised? Maybe we should forget the rest of the dogma and teach only the Golden Rule.

The latest newspaper story to concern me is about mortgage brokers who arranged sub-prime loans, in some cases for refinancing homes, then actually borrowed from their clients part of the proceeds from the loans. One such client is about to lose her home. The loan to her mortgage broker has not been repaid and she can’t afford to make the payments on the mortgage her broker secured for her. Other details in the story may or may not be totally accurate, but the idea is appalling.

Naturally, there are much more heinous acts committed all over the world every day, but this is the one that caught my eye today. What is most interesting; this is allegedly not a crime. Reportedly, no laws were broken.

What brought all my cogitation of this case on was my determination to actually read the Sunday newspaper on Sunday, something I haven’t done for ages. In fact, I just finished last Sunday’s paper yesterday. I woke up at about 5:45 a.m. and couldn’t go back to sleep because of sciatica, so I got up and watched Sunday Morning on television and started reading. I may not finish today, but it probably won’t take me all week to get through this Sunday’s Oregonian.

My favorite part of fall and winter is the availability of figure skating television shows. I watched a Kurt Browning spectacular this afternoon. The music wasn’t all to my old-fashioned liking, but the skating was breathtaking.

Floyd just made a movie run to the library and it looks like he got some oldie-goodies. Movie watching weather is just around the corner.
