Mother’s Day Sentiments

At the risk of sabotaging the economy of this country, I would love to see Mother’s Day returned to its original purpose. I don’t really need flowers, candy or a new vacuum cleaner. My greatest need, and that of mothers around the world, is peace.

Years ago, a friend of mine said to me, meaning to be derogatory, “You’ll do anything to keep the peace.” I plead guilty, but with some modification. I will not kill for peace. As a matter of fact, I don’t believe that killing ever produces peace.

So, at 1:00 p.m. today, I will stand for peace. I?ve read about an organized effort for five minutes of silence at that time. I don’t know whether there is any synchronization of time to account for different zones, or whether all will just stand whenever it is 1:00 p.m. wherever we are.

And my heart will go out to all the mothers whose sons and daughters have died prematurely for whatever reasons. May their children rest in peace.
