Payday Bars and BazaarsFor years I’ve avoided candy counters and am often surprised by candy commercials about products I’ve never heard of. A couple of days ago, after my swim, I had a craving for the peanut caramel taste of a Payday bar. It’s been years since I’ve eaten one. I was on my way to Walgreen’s and would be hitting the candy counter looking for sugar free chocolates for Floyd, so I decided to see if Paydays were still around. Not only are they still available, but now they come in at least two sizes and two flavors. One has a chocolate coating, the other is the original that I remember. The last time I bought a Payday bar, I think it was twenty-five cents. The ones I found at Walgreen’s this week were sixty-nine cents or one dollar plus change for the larger one. I chose the smaller size, original flavor and enjoyed it immensely. Recently I read an obituary that mentioned the deceased’s last meal. He was an elderly man who had been a strawberry farmer for most of his life. The final story about his life included the fact that his last meal was ice cream with strawberries. I started thinking about what I’d want for a last meal if I had to make that choice. Certainly not any candy bar. I’d probably want some of the things that I really like that I haven’t been able to digest for years, such as sauerkraut or carrot salad. On that cheerful note, I should go on to something else. Pre-holiday bazaars are in full swing. Next door, at Town Hall, a two-day crafts sale began this morning. I bought a “book pillow” that holds a book while you read it and has a ribbon bookmark attached. The one I chose is not only practical, but quite pretty. A younger friend I swim with makes these pillows. She’s recovering from a stroke and not working, so it gives her something to do and brings in a little money. My daughter Gail is also selling her crafts today out in Gresham at a bazaar there, but I didn’t feel like driving out there in the rain.
I’ve been waiting all afternoon for a call from my doctor’s office to see if she has any new ideas about how to get rid of sciatica pain. I’ve put up with it for a week now, and hope it won’t last much longer. I’ve tried everything I’ve learned about, so far.
