Reading the Headlines

Most mornings I scan the headlines on AOL and Comcast to see if there is anything going on that’s of interest to me. I’m beginning to think the health headlines are hazardous to my health—if not to my physical health, at least my mental health. For example, this morning I read that there appears to be a link between bra cup size and diabetes. Isn’t that interesting? Allegedly, if your bra cup at age twenty was “D”, you are five times more likely to become diabetic.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, I can’t remember what my bra size was at age twenty. I do remember that, at age thirteen, my petite adagio dancer aunt was passing hand-me-down clothes on to me. Her 32AA bras didn’t cover all the bases. But I was so thrilled to have bras, I wore them whether I could breathe or not.

So, the odds are, that at twenty, I wore a “C” or “D” cup. Happily, I’m not sure, so that’s one less thing to worry about. The fact is that I’m borderline diabetic and there are many diabetics among my relatives, so I’m watching my diet and monitoring my weight.

Almost every day there is some health headline to scare the gullible. Some unknown percentage of the stories may actually have merit. But, it’s impossible to know which ones to believe. So, why worry?
