Red Letter Day

For the last two months we’ve watched our potted tomato plant on the deck grow taller and sprout dozens of little yellow blossoms. I’ve poured gallons of water on it and a little Miracle Gro, but we’ve had no sign of tomatoes. This morning when I watered—Eureka—we have a one-inch very green tomato. Well, it’s a start. With the hot sun predicted for the next few days, we may even get more. There is hope for tomatoes before winter sets in.

We’ve had a few strawberries from the vines growing in a pot by our front door, but it’s now covered with blooms and there may be hope for a bigger crop of berries. So far, the birds, squirrels, etc. don’t seem to have bothered the berries.

Back inside, there’s a desk my son’s father built for me out of warped plywood probably about forty years ago. He performed a miracle and the desk was very useful for a long time. The drawers still slide in and out smoothly, but the glue has deteriorated and it’s been moved so many times that it’s hanging together by a thread. My son has urged me, for the last few years, to get rid of it. I think I’ve finally decided it’s taking up too much space for the amount of storage it provides. It’s tucked into a closet and I could put a couple of plastic three drawer containers in there that would take up less space and give me at least as much storage space, if not more.

First, I need to clean out the file cabinet that could go in the closet and not take up precious space in this multi-purpose room. Since it’s too hot to be running around outside, and it’s fairly comfortable in here, I should get started on this project. I always feel so good when I get rid of a pile of stuff. I can’t imagine why I filed so many things I’ve kept for years. Maybe it was just too difficult making the transition from office to retirement and I needed to hang on to some of the former activity. Who knows? I could pay a shrink to tell me, but I don’t need to know the answer that badly.

So, time to get to work!
