Switch it On

It seems that I have fewer AHA light-bulb-goes-on moments these days than when I was younger, so they are more notable when they occur.  Because my arthritic feet are painful much of the time, the walk from the kitchen to the dining room table before and after meals has been a drag (pun intended). This apartment’s kitchen is too small for a table, but it has a pullout section at the end of the counter between the kitchen and dining room.

After living here nearly five months, it occurred to me that the counter extension makes a small table suitable for two place mats and settings. We now eat lunch and breakfast at the tiny table and just use the dining room for dinner. Food that won’t fit on the mini-surface is placed on the end of the counter where it is easily accessible. From my chair on the kitchen side, I can reach the silverware drawer and the refrigerator. We even have room at breakfast to read the sports section and the living section of the newspaper. Guess who reads which one?

Of course, I wish I’d thought of it sooner. That may have something to do with the fact that I didn’t even discover the pullout until I’d been here awhile and my son pointed it out one time when he came over.

Yesterday I began writing the long-postponed memoir story that has kept me deadlocked for awhile. I may get back to it when I finish this blog entry.

The sinus problems I’ve had for the last week or so seem to have settled in one ear now, so I guess I’ll have to give up and get some medical attention. I haven’t been outside for the last two or three days. It’s warm and dry in here and I can watch the wind blow and the rain fall through the windows.

We were going to have a birthday dinner for my son today, but postponed it for a few days until I feel better. I’d tell you his age, but my niece in Shelton is still carrying on about having her age revealed publicly on a local radio station and in the newspaper, after she was in a fender bender. Of course, she’s a schoolteacher so I understand her consternation.

Time to rest up before I fix dinner.
