The Old is New Again“Sonic Hosts Car-Hop Skating Competition Sometime in the last couple of years, a Sonic drive-in popped up in our neighborhood. I haven’t eaten much fast food lately, so I haven’t been there yet. Obviously, I need to stop by and see if there are actually car hops on roller skates as in days of yore. At my age, I remember many days of yore. Roller skating was one form of recreation I enjoyed as a teenager. However, I never considered skating around carrying trays of food. My part-time job in school was in a cafeteria. I’m sure I could have earned more working in drive-ins or regular restaurants—no tips at a cafeteria, but they were very good about accommodating my work hours around my classes. Skating for recreation meant I had to rent skates. Women’s skates were not available in my size, so I had to rent men’s skates—a bit embarrassing on a date. The same situation applied to bowling rental shoes. When I was in a league years later, I bought my own shoes and ball, eliminating that problem. I haven’t skated or bowled for many years now. My recreational exercise is mostly in water. Fortunately I don’t care much any more that I don’t remotely resemble Esther Williams, either in a bathing suit, or in swimming technique. But I do fondly remember watching her movies and I’m still fascinated by synchronized swimming. Our local pool is populated with senior citizens of all shapes and sizes and different skill levels. Some just walk around the pool and some swim a hundred laps or more. I’m closer to the former level than the latter.
