Vagaries of Old Age

Yesterday was a high-energy day—at least as high as it gets these days. I managed to do laundry, grocery shop, empty the dishwasher, spend a few hours at the computer, and finish with an hour of exercise in the pool. Today was another story. My blood pressure dropped fairly low a couple of times and left me weak and light-headed. Those times are a nuisance, but never last very long. However, the drop in energy lasts longer. I still have to continue to monitor the blood pressure and get the meds adjusted to stabilize it more.

I hope to feel more energetic tomorrow. The annual picnic of Oregon State Poetry Association and Washington State Poets will be held in Vancouver at a poet’s home. I’d like to go if the temperature isn’t outrageous and I’m feeling adventurous. We’ll see. I plan to swim in the morning, since I didn’t today, and see how it goes.

My foray on to Facebook tonight turned up some good pictures of my daughter’s retirement party. Also, some nieces had filled out questionnaires with interesting tidbits of information about themselves. I’m happy that so many cousins of my kids are in touch by email, Facebook and other similar venues. I had many cousins when I was young, but didn’t have that kind of communication with most of them. I lost touch with all but a few. Those who have survived and are in contact with me are very special.

A stack of guidelines for poetry contests with deadlines that are approaching sits on the table at my left. Maybe Sunday I can get around to finding some poems and printing them to send off for possible prizes. It’s been a long time since I won even honorable mentions—a long time since I’ve entered a contest. I have written a few new poems this year, but haven’t been grinding them out as I did a few years back. It would be fun to start competing again.
