World’s FairsOn my last visit to my chiropractor, he noticed and asked about the book I was reading. I told him it was about the building of the transcontinental railroad. Then I mentioned that I had first heard about the driving of the golden spike as a child while attending a World’s Fair in San Francisco. We speculated about whether or not World’s Fairs are still being held since neither of us had heard of any recently. So, I went home and asked my old friend Google the question. The answer is a little complicated. World’s Fairs are still being held in various parts of the world, but none has been produced in this country for many years. As a matter of fact, one report states that the United States pulled out of the World’s Fair organization and stopped contributing to it some time ago. In spite of that information, there is a hint that San Francisco might possibly bid for the next one on which bidding has not closed, to be held in 2020. In 2020 I’ll be 91 if all goes well. If there should be a World’s Fair in the bay city that year, it would be a kick to go see it, providing I’m still around and can still get around, a worthy goal for which to aspire.
There will be several World’s Fairs around the world between now and then, but I’m weary of flying long distances. Besides, maybe therell be internet coverage that will make it easier for old folks to benefit from such educational wonders. Wouldn’t a web cam or a Discovery channel special be swell ideas?
