Thanks Day

We often remark about how lucky I was to find this comfortable apartment about a year and a half ago. Yesterday, appropriately the day before Thanksgiving, I had a visitor who definitely reinforced those feelings.

When I answered the doorbell, a small elderly woman stood on the steps. She apologized for bothering me but asked how to get to the rental office of King City Apartments. I gave her directions, then she said she wanted to talk to me about living here. She said she had been in our apartment before, when someone else lived here and she liked it. When she came inside, she thought some redecorating had been done, making it even nicer.

In just a few minutes, she let me know she is ninety years old and just moved out of her house, that hasn’t sold, into an apartment where she has some meal service. But she likes these apartments much better than where she lives now. She knows her children would be furious if they knew she wants to move again, so she’ll probably wait until spring, but maybe contact the management here to get on a waiting list for a preferred unit.

Although I assured her we liked living here very much, I tried to discourage her from moving again. I’ve moved so many times I know how traumatic it is. She said she still liked to cook, so she wouldn’t mind not having any meal service. I pointed out she might not always be able to do that, and she agreed. I don’t know where she went when she left here, she still drives, but she made me feel even more grateful for our home.

In addition to being grateful for this great place to live, I appreciate the fact that, once again, I don’t have to cook this Thanksgiving. We will be having dinner at Floyd’s daughter’s house with many of his family. Sunday, my kids will come here for pizza, our celebration of the holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
