Remind Me Not to Read the NewspaperI seem to have skipped my second childhood and proceeded back toward infancy. It took two naps to get me through the day today. Just joking, I surely wouldn’t want to be an infant today. Being born slightly before the depression began was bad enough. Those hard times made those of us who lived through them tougher, I think. Certainly my family didn’t have it as bad as many because my father was able to work all during the depression. The Sunday Oregonian ran a long article about the many babies and children in foster care who were born to drug-addicted mothers. Most have a multitude of physical and/or emotional problems. The article featured a saintly couple who care for many of these kids. It’s truly a blessing that there are people who are willing and able to take these children in and give them tender loving care and the best lives possible under the circumstances. It seems we keep putting Band-aids on the drug problem. I don’t know what an effective cure would be, or if it’s possible. I certainly hope better minds are working on it. |
