Farewell to Summer

Steady rain has been falling most of the day and shows no signs of stopping soon. Leaves are turning gold and falling. With the handwriting on the wall, we put the deck umbrella and the fans in the attic this morning.

There may well be some warm sunny days in October. Since we?’l be in Maui the last two weeks of the month, we’ll possibly miss them. But we should have plenty of sun over there.

The words of September Song come to mind and I notice that not only the “days grow short,” but the weeks, months and years are rushing by. Rushing, however, is no longer my modus operandi. Slow and steady like the hare, I persisted in reorganizing the closets yesterday. To be sure that I’d complete the task, I threw unsorted clothes and hangers on the bed, knowing I’d have to clear it off to crawl in. Now the closets are rearranged for winter, and I’m a mass of aching muscles. Although I continually weed out clothing for Goodwill, we still are overloaded with choices of what to wear.

Fortunately, this weather is conducive to sitting at the computer, so I’ve done some editing. Reading requires very little muscle strain, so I’ve sandwiched some of that in between, also. Somehow, I never got around to reading any of Thomas Wolfe. Now I’m about a third of the way through The Bonfire of the Vanities. It’s a little hard to identify with such a “New York” story, but I do admire Wolfe’s skill.

I think a nap is next on my agenda, and maybe a swim after that. Progress is very slow on the project to replace our hot tub. We are assured it will begin sometime in October, but no completion date is projected. Floyd and I and all my swim friends really miss it. He and I have access to another hot tub, but it’s miles away.
