Arising Through the HazeAt last, I’m arising from the fire and brimstone into a position where I have my work cut out for me—getting all the stuff from two old computers fed into this one. There are fairly easy ways to transfer data if you have a network, but for some reason, we can’t seem to get a network going in my little corner of this building. Actually, using a flash drive and/or CD’s to transfer data has the advantage that the data can be left on those instruments as backups and just copied into its new home. I really don’t need a network since all my computer work is in one room and I intend to use my laptop for any outside work and then transfer it to this Pentium with its big memory. I hope to be able to convince the laptop to limp along for a few more years that way. I’m certainly glad we humans and our pets don’t age as fast as computers. Richard got most of the glitches in my equipment ironed out today and left me with instructions to work on the laptop’s problem. Yesterday I managed to persuade the security software in this equipment to allow me access to my web site software. Enough about my techie trials. Reading a biography of Condoleezza Rice motivates me to reflect on the fact that this politically powerful woman, arguably the most powerful in this country, and Oprah Winfrey, possibly the most popular, are both black females. They also have in common their single and childless status. Do I only imagine that current events are more interesting and exciting than what I heard in my high school history classes?
The sideshow of the political campaigning taking place before our very eyes is certainly gripping (not to be confused with griping). I do hear griping about the length of our campaigns and the huge amount of money poured into them—some of it even comes from me. I could certainly live with a lot less politicking. Would our economy collapse without all that advertising money? Is it collapsing anyway, as we speak?
