Jumping off the SoapboxNow back to mundane, non-political commentary, I was happy to have my ophthalmologist agree with me yesterday that my second eye (left) should have its cataract removed as soon as possible. With luck, that will be sometime in the next two months. My passport expires next month and Floyd’s also expires this year, so we have finally filled out renewal applications and will go have passport pictures taken this afternoon. We are fortunate to have a tiny post office in a drug store just a few blocks away that provides this service for a small fee. I can’t help but wonder if, for a large fee, you could get a better photo, but why bother as long as it’s recognizable. As is often the case, it looks as if we will have a damp, gloomy Memorial Day weekend. I’m appreciating the rain, after having to haul water to potted plants in the hot weather. However, my joints don’t appreciate the rapid, frequent climate changes. A hot shower felt good this morning and a swim and hot tub will be even better later today. A visit from a fun cousin and his wife on Sunday will brighten up the weekend climate for us. Yesterday I received a letter from one of my sisters who formerly corresponded regularly with many relatives and friends. She commented about how strange it was for her to actually be using “snail mail” these days. She enclosed the obituary of a mutual friend. I notice she used a “forever” stamp. I hadn’t seen them before. This one has the Liberty Bell on it. I need to get some of those.
Well, it’s been fun to get my mind off the election for a while. Maybe I can even get back to work on memoirs. I did enter an AARP contest requesting the first two sentences of a memoir. Even if mine doesn’t attract any attention, it will be fun to read other entries.
