Interesting Times

I’m convinced that old curse has come to pass; we live in interesting times.

The current presidential election is undoubtedly the most confusing and unusual that I’ve observed in my many years. It’s probably past time to have an election that shakes the populace enough to get the slackers to vote. We should have a record number of voters; but you never know. Apathy is tough to conquer. When the McCain/Palin controversy shakes down, it will be interesting to see how public opinion sways. I would have preferred that Obama choose Hillary, but I can live with his choice. I can also concede that he may be wiser than I. If he should become president, I certainly hope he’s smarter than I am.

Weather around the world is another fascinating and terrifying subject. We are all affected by the misery of those who live in the hurricane areas. I feel fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest where rain is our biggest problem. We have an occasional serious windstorm or tiny tornado or earthquake, but nothing like what goes on in the Southeast.

Developments in the background, such as depletion of natural resources and global warming contribute to “interesting times” also. We all need to be alert and active to adjust to the times and do the best we can to improve our lot and, more importantly, that of many others who are so much worse off. Merely existing is not enough.

I have taken the prerogative of my age to climb on a soapbox occasionally. Now I’ll climb down.
