A Somber Day

Another somber day for the world. This is not a political blog, therefore I’ll not express my opinions. I will grieve for all those who are victims of terrorists everywhere. It is sad to reflect that, because of today’s bombing, London may be among the safest places in the world when we visit there next month.

That will probably not be true of the other cities we visit in Europe. However, I can’t believe that we will be any less safe over there than we are at home on the highways or even our city’s streets.

I located the hotel where we’ll be staying on the London map today. It looks like it’s walking distance to the Thames River. Tonight I found a Mapquest map with larger detail than the fold out map I bought at AAA.

When we learned our hotel is a five-star, I remembered how I felt when I worked for the Benson Hotel in Portland and got comp rooms at deluxe hotels in other cities. My pay was so poor, my luggage so threadbare, I felt really out of place.

However, at my age now, I could care less. I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on luggage the way it’s treated these days. Nor do I buy expensive clothes for this old body. We can just pretend we’re the Beverly Hillbillies.
