Neighbors

It is said, “Good fences make good neighbors.” Our only close neighbor has a fence around his back yard, as we do also. However, the front yards were separated by a hedge that has been dying. We had to remove part of it. As a result, our living room windows that face each other are no longer hidden.

For the last couple of months, due to warm weather, the neighbor kept his window open. Every time I stepped out the front door, his dogs starting barking and throwing themselves against the screen. I knew it was only a matter of time until the screen gave way. In addition, he and his housemate both chain smoke. We would get their second hand smoke if we tried to sit outside or even opened our windows.

A few days ago I came home and observed the neighbor walking around and around his place, looking upset. I saw the mangled screen on the ground. He solved the problem by installing a room air conditioner. Life is much better here now; I don’t know how it is over there.
