Travel, Trees, and Rita

On such a beautiful day, I couldn’t think of a good place to go or a valid reason to play hooky, so I stayed inside and wrote more travel journals. The next two days will be cloudy, if predictions prove true, so it will be easier to stick with writing chores.

The travel pages on my website are now operating smoothly. When new entries are added and the older ones drop off, they can be accessed by clicking on the travel archives link.

We are planning a California trip early in October to visit relatives and to tour Death Valley. This will be the first long trip for Al’s new Ford compact wagon. We have a tiny microwave and a 12-volt refrigerator to take along, so we don’t have to eat in restaurants all the time. The refrigerator will convert to 110 also, so we can plug it in overnight in motels. We’ve traveled that way before and it works well for us. I plan to take my laptop computer also, so I can hook it up occasionally to post blog entries and catch up on email.

The trees here are starting to turn color already. It seems I was writing that in this blog just a few weeks ago, rather than many months. I’m enjoying the big tree outside my office window; I know it will be naked soon and bare for several months. I do remember that, last fall, one lonely leaf hung on to the little dogwood tree in the back yard long after all the others had fallen.

I can’t help but think of the people who may possibly be in the path of Hurricane Rita. Her more glamorous name is unlikely to lessen the danger she presents. Let us hope that landfall reduces her strength significantly. All those who live in the paths of hurricanes have suffered enough.
