What Day Is It Again?

Maybe some computer guru out there can explain to me why the strip at the top of my screen tells me it is November 24, 2005, but my Word program tries to convince me it’s still the 23rd. Sometimes it sticks on the same day for several days, then for weeks it will offer me the correct date every day.

It’s difficult enough these days to remember what day of the week it is, much less the actual date. I don’t need a computer helping me to goof up. In my turkey, yams and pumpkin-pie induced lethargy, I confuse easily.

While I sometimes regret not having grandchildren, one of the many things I’m thankful for today is that I don’t have to do a lot of Christmas shopping. I can sleep in tomorrow morning and turn on the news if I want to watch the crowds frantically throw money around in the stores.

I can stay inside, warm and dry, and read or write or do whatever suits me. With all the leftovers, I won’t even have to cook. For most of my life, I didn’t get the Friday after Thanksgiving off, so I did all the cleaning, preparation and cooking after work on Wednesday or very early on Thursday morning. Some years I was fortunate enough to be a guest elsewhere. Now I have much more free time and a mate who helps with the chores.

It is likely that all of my friends and relatives who read this are warm and dry and well fed tonight, as we are. I am thankful for that also, but mindful of all those who aren’t so fortunate. May the future bring them better days.
