A Short Fun Trip

We had a lovely drive up the Columbia Gorge to Cascade Locks this afternoon. We went up the Washington side on Highway 14, and watched the sun set over the river, turning Mt. Hood a pale pink and showing up the snow on Mt. St. Helens. We stopped in Stevenson before crossing the river to Cascade Locks and enjoyed the Christmas light displays on the downtown streets.

We ate Papa Murphy’s pizza with Al’s niece and her husband in their cozy home on a hill. Al and Bruce played chess; Virginia and I played Spite and Malice, a card game my sisters taught me and I’ve been sharing with others. We left for home around 9:30 and drove along the river on the Oregon side, with a half moon shining down on us. We were across the highway from the rock slide of a few days ago, and didn’t even see it.

Traffic through Portland in the afternoon and heading up the river at sunset was slow and tedious. Homebound traffic was fairly heavy, but moved right along.

Tomorrow morning I hope to swim, then pick up a few items for Sunday dinner on my way home. At home, I’ll decide whether to do some housecleaning or work on the California trip report.
