Pre-Christmas Revery

Other than the time, about 35 years ago, when I got an ambulance ride through all the Christmas lights on Portland streets to the hospital, this year is the most low-key holiday season I’ve experienced. Realizing that, I wonder if my interest in celebrating will continue to diminish as the years pass.

Holiday decorations in the house this year consist of candles and candy canes hanging from the huge ficus plant in the dining room. All of the hustle and bustle that surrounds us feels like overkill to me. Probably if I had grandchildren I would feel more excited at this season. I do enjoy hearing from and spending time with friends and relatives, especially those I seldom see during the year.

With pangs of pain, I also remember those who are no longer with us.

I’m looking forward to spending Christmas Eve and Christmas day with friends and relatives. With or without bright lights and decorations, that will be the best present anyone could get.
