A Day With Kyran

We had a great day today playing with Al’s great-grandson, Kyran, and visiting with his parents. They arrived last night and stayed with us so Kyran’s dad could attend a meeting in Portland. He left early this morning and returned in early afternoon to have a late lunch with us before they headed back home. While he was away, we had a nice visit with Al’s granddaughter and great-grandson.

Having no grandchildren myself, I’ve lost touch with babies and the differences in raising them these days. Of course, they all have many more toys and gadgets than we, or our kids, had. They also have the benefit of modern medical research. Because of that, most are kept on their backs when they sleep. This reportedly has considerably reduced the incidence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). As a result of spending so much time on their backs, most don’t like to be on their stomachs, so don’t learn to crawl as quickly. Some may not even crawl before they walk, I’m told.

Kyran is a very curious baby and wants to see everything that’s going on, so I can definitely understand why he doesn’t want his face down at any time. As alert and active as he is now, I’m sure life will be a challenge for his parents when he gets into motion, whether it’s walking or crawling. Today he is six months old, so I imagine he’ll be tearing around soon. He has a couple of teeth already and wants to chew on anything he can get his hands on.
