Papantla Flyers

We played cards this evening and I watched some of the ice skating at the Olympics and nearly forgot to write something for the blog. I’m still working on travel logs describing our recent cruise.

Today I was looking for information about the Papantla Flyers we saw in Mazatlan. I found several websites that offer great pictures and descriptions and one that has a video of them whirling upside down around the top of a 90-foot pole. The pole in Mazatlan was supposedly only 75 feet tall, but at those heights it would make very little difference if someone fell.

This is one of the websites I found. I’ll probably include several on my travel page: http://www.mcvrn.com/papantla_flyers.html

We were fascinated by their act. According to the article at the above website, there are several troupes of these flyers who perform around Mexico. The group we saw performed as the final act of a show that included several folkdance numbers.

In the very cold weather we’re having, I’m appreciating the fact that our electric service, and consequently our heat, has not been interrupted. We picked the wrong time to go to Mexico. We should have waited a couple of weeks and we’d be gone now.
