Stimulating Dormant Brain Cells

For an old lady with no grandchildren, it’s nice to be around to help my middle-aged kids out. My son and daughter-in-law may object to that adjective, but my daughter probably can’t argue about it.

I’ll be on standby tomorrow through Saturday to help my son and daughter-in-law while he recovers from surgery. Waiting at the hospital tomorrow should give me a chance to catch up on some reading I’ve been missing.

I’m trying to regenerate buried knowledge about playing bridge, using a combination of tutoring and studying an old rule book of my mother’s. There are weekly bridge games in this complex and I was invited to attend when I first moved in, but I would be embarrassed by how much I’ve forgotten, if I didn’t brush up first.

I found an old card game rulebook of my mother’s yesterday and was surprised to find that Spite and Malice was in there. I didn’t realize it had been around that long. However, the rules I learned vary dramatically from what is in the book.

When my sisters and I get together in October, maybe I can persuade them to play by the old rules and see if I have any better luck.
